Not a whole lot of things happened this week. My tooth was the main reason for that. A dead root lead to an abscess, and several days of intense pain. I got on meds on Monday, but by the end of the day my face had swollen to the point where I could barely open my mouth enough to take the pills. I finally was able to sleep Tuesday morning, and thankfully after that the swelling and pain started to ease back. I missed work part of Monday and all of Tuesday, worked from home Wednesday, got a root canal on Thursday,  and finally got back into the office on Friday. It was a very long week to say the least.

Naturally, I had to cancel some of my plans for the week as well. Run club was a no-go, as well as my dinner with former coworkers (although that one got rescheduled for next week). I was able to keep my Friday plans with my good friend though. Her and her BF and I and my wife met at a local festival for dinner. My friends and my wife were meeting for the first time, and I won't lie, I was a bit nervous about it. But I think things went pretty well, and it would be great to get together again.

The other thing that got derailed by my tooth was having a family dinner last weekend. My wife's uncle is in town - he was evacuated out of an area in Saskatchewan that was destroyed by forest fire, and he came to visit his sister and decompress. Fortunately he is still here for a few more days so we were able to have dinner tonight. It was a really good visit.

Oh, and lastly, all of the inventories that were supposed to happen this weekend were cancelled,  so I got my Saturday back!

And that's all for this time around. Back to a "normal" week tomorrow - fingers crossed it stays normal. =]

Early post today so I can go to bed. I've got an infection of some kind in my tooth/jaw, and I'm pretty drained from a weekend of constant pain (yes, I'll waiting at the dentist's door when they open in the morning).

Work was slow again. This coming week will be busier since there will be inventory counts next weekend, but that too will be short-lived. I don't see any real improvements in the future either, unfortunately.

I had a very active week socially. I think Wednesday and today were the only days that I stayed in. I had lunch with my good friend on Thursday, after work drinks with friends two nights, run club two nights, and a small group hung out after my race yesterday. The week ahead looks to be similarly busy as well.

Speaking of my race, it went quite well. I had planned to push for a new PR, but my tooth and the heat had other ideas. Still, I was very pleased with my results, including being 8th in my age group. That will be my final fast run for a while, as I shift over into training for my two half marathons in the fall.

And that's about it. Time to herd the cats in from the porch (they love it out here, as do I) and get some sleep. Wish me luck with the dentist. I'll be back next week. =]

Well, it's that time of the week again.

The work week started out with two days of month end chaos, followed by two days of boredom, and wrapped up with a Friday off. I decided that I'm going to go back to the four day work week through most of the summer, partly because work is slow, but also because it gives me a much better balance with the different things I do every week.

I had good runs with my run clubs, including a shoe demo on Tuesday where we got to test out various models of a certain brand. This brand didn't fit me all that well, but I do need a new pair of shoes so I'll be going into the local shop for their next sale and try some others. I also did my weekly long run this morning, and I was able to achieve one of my goals for the year - 10K in under 60 minutes.

I got my brakes done this week, and that cost me through the nose. A year back I figured I'd save a few bucks by getting one of my wife's coworkers to replace the pads. Big mistake - he replaced a part incorrectly, and it ended up doing so much damage that I had to replace the entire back brakes. Lesson learned on that one.

Having Friday off I decided not to get groceries after work Thursday, but to wait until Friday morning. That was probably the least aggravating shopping trip I've had in I don't know how long. I think one of the reasons I usually hate it so much is because I always feel rushed, like I'm scrambling to get it done because I have so many other things to do afterward. But I had nothing pressing on my schedule (I planned out the weekend again, which is working out very well) and the store wasn't busy, and I was actually in a fairly good mood when I got home. Since I'll be taking Fridays off for the next while, I'll probably keep this up and see how it goes.

The rest of the weekend went pretty well. I had lunch with my good friend on Friday, got a few chores done around the house, met up with some friends Saturday afternoon for a couple patio beers, and had a night in with pizza and a movie tonight. Coming up, I've got a 5K race next Saturday, and dinner with my former coworkers early in the week after that, and hopefully another decent weekend before getting into my heavy year end workload.

All in all a good week. And now it's time to turn in so I can try and kick off the next one on the right foot. So long until the next time. =]

It's been mostly an OK week, although there were a few things I could have done without.

First, I don't know if you recall the trip I made to one of the plants a few months back, where the production manager was trying to force two incompatible systems to work together - basically trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Well, he's still at it. And in a meeting this week, it came to light that the plant has been allowed to bypass one of the major procedures for scheduling, because "it's easier to use Excel". Not only is this clown wasting time and resources on a project that will never succeed, but they're creating their own problems by not following critical procedures. A colleague asked me afterward why I was so quiet during the meeting. Simple - if I had said anything, I was going to explode. Like, really blow up. F-bombs and everything. Can't do that, even if the level of stupidity is so high that it would be completely justified.

Also work related, we lost another person from the office, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't voluntary. We all got an invitation on Thursday afternoon to go out for lunch on Friday to celebrate B's retirement - pretty last minute. Funny thing is, he had never mentioned anything about retiring. In fact, he and I often joked about when the company would be showing up to let us go. Well, he was at work Friday morning, they went to lunch (I had other plans and didn't go), and when I got back he was gone. Now, you can't tell me he decided to retire spur of the moment like that. No, I'm sure that he falls under the category of "left to pursue other interests" - the corporate world's not-so-subtle way of saying he got the boot.

EDIT: So it turns out B did retire. It seemed sudden because he kept it to himself as long as he could. He's actually moving across the country, in just a few days. Still a shame to see him go, but I'm glad it was on his terms.

In better news, Friday's lunch with my good friend was really great, although for some reason the restaurant I picked was ridiculously busy and there were no parking spaces available. We both ended up parking a block away, on the opposite side of one of the busiest main roads in the city. Fortunately we still had lots of time to eat, and the walk back to our cars was enjoyable once we got over to a side street and away from the traffic.

Running is going well, and I'm continuing to improve. Both run clubs are a lot of fun, and I've been getting a lot of encouragement, and compliments on my progress. I have another 5K race in a couple weeks, and right after that I'll be starting an actual training plan for my half marathon races coming up in the fall. I already know I can run the distance, but obviously I want to perform the best that I can on race day.

Today was a busy day to finish out the week. I started off with my long run, which was a 12 mile trail run (it was supposed to be 11 but I wasn't paying attention for when I needed to turn around). After getting back and cleaning up, I had to start on the weekly food prep, as well as get Sunday family dinner on the go. I finally got to sit down at dinner time, after 10 hours on my feet. Needless to say, I'm fairly worn out and ready for some sleep.

Which is where I'm headed right now. Good night, sleep well, and I'll see you all again next time. =]

Short and sweet this week.  I had a long day today and my energy reserves are completely tapped.

Work was nothing special (again), although I did have a project to work on that ate a couple days. Nothing particularly interesting, but it did help stave off the incredible boredom I've had to deal with the previous couple of weeks.

Goals continue to be in the "average" range. I'm going to take a look at making some modifications for next month though - I'm finding that some of the items are almost impossible to succeed at as weekly goals, and that's pretty frustrating.

Running continues to go well. I did another long run today (this will be a regular Sunday thing now), a bit shorter at 8 miles, but I pushed the pace compared to last week. It was another run to test where my capabilities are now, so in a few weeks when I start an actual training plan for my fall half marathons, I can set some realistic goals.

The Thursday grocery experiment seems to be working out, and having the extra time on the weekend is wonderful. One thing though, I've learned that it doesn't matter what day or time I do it, grocery shopping is still the one chore that aggravates me the most.

I took tomorrow as a vacation day, so with another 3-day weekend I made another schedule for what I wanted to get done. That experiment is working out well also - it'll be interesting to see how it goes on a regular weekend when I don't have the luxury of an extra day.

I got to spend Friday evening hanging out with my good friend after I went to run club, and as an added bonus we got to hang out a bit today as well. Her sister invited me to the scavenger hunt she was hosting, and that was a lot of fun.

And lastly, I managed to get a quarterly activity done. There is a local company that makes gourmet sausages, and every few months the owner puts on a sausage-making class. He talked a bit about the science behind it, and then we got to actually prepare a batch of sausages to take home. It was very interesting and lots of fun, and the next time he does the second part of the class I think I'm going to do that one too.

Overall a pretty good week. And now, as I struggle to keep my eyelids open, I'm calling it a night. Enjoy the week ahead!  =]

Very tired tonight, and almost went to bed except I had a couple other things to do on the computer as well, so here I am.

I'll gloss over the first half of the week. Work, meh. Goals, mediocre. Running, lots. Much the same as most weeks.

I decided recently to start doing my grocery shopping on the way home from work on Thursdays, rather than on the weekend. This week was my first attempt, and I'll say that it went fairly well. Getting that task out of the way opened up quite a bit of time for other things, which has always been a challenge for me. Friday I enjoyed lunch and conversation with my good friend, which is always wonderful. I also went to run club after work. There was a shoe demo going on this week and there must have been over 100 runners there - I've only seen a crowd that size at a race.

We had a holiday here in Canada today, so "yay" for a three-day weekend. I actually made a schedule for the weekend ahead of time - some recreational activities, some chores, and everything spread out so that I wouldn't feel overwhelmed looking at the list. Mostly it was a success. Saturday got rearranged a bit - I had planned to go to the driving range, but a running friend was having people over in the afternoon so I did that instead and had a great time. Sunday morning I went for my first long run of the year - 16 km/10 miles - basically to see what my starting point is for when I begin training for my half marathons in the fall. The run went really well, but I got a late start, and then I had another delay afterward, and by the end of the day I had fallen behind on several things and was starting to get frustrated. I had a friend come over to help me take the hard top off my jeep, and I think  that's where things got derailed. I think if I had put that off until next weekend, Sunday would have turned out much better. And today's list went ok, although I didn't get to go out for a bike ride as planned - but there's always next weekend.

That's it in a nutshell. Take it easy, have a great week, and I'll see you soon. =]

Hey, I'm on time! Or am I a week late? Either or, once again the late hockey game has me scrambling to catch up, so here we go.

Not much to say about work, other than that each day there seems to be just a bit less work to do. Not a promising sign by any means. But I'm in 'wait and see' mode now - I've stuck it out this long, I'm not about to walk away.

Goals dropped again to an all-time low two weeks ago, but with a great deal of diligent effort, rebounded significantly last week. The hardest part has been breaking some bad habits I've fallen into - well, not habits, coping mechanisms. I've made some good progress on that, and I have some plans for some new things that should help keep it moving forward, but it's tough when the underlying causes are still there.

Running has been going well. I've logged lots of kilometers, but still relatively shorter distances. This past Friday I had my second race of the year, and that went really well. Not only was it a really fun day hanging out with a number of run club friends, but I also hit a new personal record for a timed 5K. Now I need to make time for longer runs at least once a week, to start getting ready for the two half-marathons that are coming up in the fall. I also kinda decided that I want to do a full marathon next year, but we'll see (I think I'm getting addicted).

The bulk of this weekend was spent getting the back porch and outdoor furniture cleaned and set up. It was a lot of work, but everything is all set and looks great. We even took advantage of the nice weather today to have mother's day dinner outside. The food was excellent, and we also gave my MIL the framed puzzle that I had finished a couple weeks back, which she really loved.

Well, in an effort to start the coming week off on the right foot, I'm going to end this here and get myself off to bed. Have a wonderful week, and I'll see you the next time around. =]

Late again, I know. I was out in the sun without a hat yesterday and got a bit burnt on my scalp, and I ended up sleeping almost ten hours straight and even missed my first alarm this morning. A good long rest, but still a tad tender on the top of the old noggin. Anyway, the past week was quite a rollercoaster, so let's get started.

Oddly enough, work has continued to be fairly ok. How long that will last is a good question, but the longer things stay good, the worse I think it'll be when the other shoe drops. Goals, however, were the worst they've been all year, and I think a reality check is in order. I made these goals for a reason, but with several of them I'm almost not trying anymore. Disappointed is a good word, and I do want to correct that moving forward.

Monday I started catching up on some of the chores I didn't finish on the weekend. Unfortunately I got into a snippy mood quickly, and everyone I encountered during that hour or so had to deal with me in that state, warranted or not. I don't feel like I handled those interactions the best way, and probably shouldn't even have initiated one of them.

Tuesday into Wednesday was by far the worst situation I've gone through in I don't know how long. I went to run club, ran decent, and socialized for a few hours afterward as usual. I had three drinks - only three. I remember paying my tab, and then waking up the next morning. I have absolutely no memory at all of the eight hours in between. Now I've had alcohol hit me harder than I expected it to (lots of reasons - low blood sugar, overly tired, etc), but never have I experienced a complete loss of memory - and it's scary as fuck. The question even came up, was I in control of my drinks at all times, or could someone have slipped me something. I don't have answers, but I am making changes and paying close attention to myself and how I feel - I never want to experience that again.

Friday was a nice upswing though. I got to spend the evening with my good friend, and with curling done for the season, we were able to get together earlier than usual and go for dinner. Rain put a slight damper on the night, but it was still a great time.

Weekend chores went ok, although I did have a moment early Sunday morning where I almost hit panic mode. I had plans in the afternoon which meant I had a timeline to keep to, and there was just so much on the list. But I took a pause, let the panic ease off, and started fresh, and it really helped. Everything got done on time, and I was able to keep my plans. Another friend had invited me to attend a fundraising event, and it turned out to be a really good time (even though, as mentioned earlier, a hat would have been a good idea). I met several of her friends and had some good conversations, and somehow didn't feel as awkward or out of place as I normally do when meeting new people, which was a surprising twist.

And that will wrap things up for another week. Oh wait - somewhere in there (Wednesday I think) I finished the puzzle I was working on. My MIL saw it and really likes it, so we're going to frame it for her at some point soon.

And now that will wrap things up for another week. Take care, enjoy the spring weather, and I'll be back in May. =]

Quite a bit has happened over the past week, and since I'm short on time (thanks a lot hockey playoffs) I'll get right to it.

The travel home from my work trip was mostly uneventful. Except for the nail in the tire of the rental car. And my coworker having to get food in the airport and making us the last two to get on the plane. It was a pretty turbulent flight too. So I guess it wasn't quite so uneventful.

I did another hard crash after dinner Monday - I was so tired I don't even remember unpacking. It made me very glad that I had taken Tuesday off work. Not because of the trip, but because it was my birthday and I felt like I wanted a day for myself. I relaxed for a bit in the morning, and worked on my puzzle for a while. I went to lunch with my wife, and then ran a couple errands in the afternoon. In the evening I had my curling banquet, complete with a rendition of 'happy birthday' from the group. Unfortunately I had to cut that part of the night short, because my run club was also expecting me for cake (and more singing). I will say, being the center of attention is not my favourite thing in the world, but I did end up having a lot of fun.

With the travel day, a day off, and the holiday on Friday, my work week was a very short two days. Much of that was spent dealing with the results of the weekend inventory, and explaining how more areas of the system work (I say 'explaining', but it was more like contradicting multiple false assumptions because people simply refuse to ask those of us who actually know). I'm not done with that mess by any stretch, but the weekend rescued me from dealing with it for now.

Friday was a fairly relaxing day, but I did get out of the house for a couple of things. Some of my run club friends were participating in a charity run event at a nearby park, so I went for a bit to see how they were doing. The event was basically running/walking up and down a hill as many times as they could, with the max being 120 laps over a ten hour period (yes, runners are often nuts!). After that I had lunch with my good friend, and with it being a holiday we didn't have to rush off to work afterward, which was very nice.

The rest of the weekend was normalish, although I did have several extra things to try and get done so today got hectic. I wasn't expecting to get through the whole list, but I didn't get as far as I wanted to either, so I've got a few things to work on during the coming week.

Goals took a beating over the past couple weeks as well, which I figured would happen. What I wasn't expecting was the 2.5 lbs that I put on. It's much harder to take it off than it is to put it on, so I've got that to focus on too. Now that curling is done I'm planning to start going to another run club on Fridays, and hopefully I'll get a motivation boost from that and start getting things back on track.

And that about covers it. I hope everyone had a wonderful and fun weekend, and the week ahead treats you well. =]

This will be a fairly short post, and yes it's late, but for good reason.

Last week started good. I had my first run event, was productive at work, and run club was a fun night. But then Wednesday rolled around.

Was voluntold to travel to Tennessee on Friday to be there for the plant's inventory on the weekend. Normally not that much of an issue, except for me, two days is very last minute to pull that together. Plus, there were added headaches - i had to deal with a corporate travel department for the first time, and coordinate the trip with other people to travel together. It made for a very stressful couple of days.

The inventory itself went better than I expected, but it was a lonnnng day. 11pm Saturday to 7pm Sunday, with only a couple breaks to run back to the hotel and freshen up. Needless to say I crashed hard after dinner last night (hence why I'm late posting). Now I just need to finish packing up and I'll be heading home.

Coming up, I've got a few social things happening, plus I'll have to deal with the fallout of this inventory trip, so it's going to be another busy week. I hope everyone is doing well and has a great week ahead. Ttyl. =]
arthur_p_dent: (Default)
Almost fell asleep without getting my Sunday computer stuff done. My goals fell off further this week - I can't afford to add that to the list of missed items.

I had my 5K race this morning. It was my first actual race in almost a decade, and I had long forgotten what the experience was like. There was a large contingent from my run club there and we all made sure to be encouraging to each other. I finished in 28:47 - one second faster than my previous best time for a 5K, which I was extremely happy about. Many others in our group also had personal bests, which was great to see. My next race is in May, and that promises to be a fun event as well.

I did less hiding from adulthood this week (not a lot less, but still less). I had to get an exterminator in because we started getting ants coming into the house through the garage. As much as I don't like dealing with stuff like that (or paying for it either), this was something I definitely couldn't procrastinate on. It did mess up much of my Friday, but fortunately my good friend and I were able to arrange to have lunch on Thursday instead, and it turned out to be a wonderful meal (probably the best I've had at this particular restaurant).

Work is pretty much the same. I'm still at the point where I'd like to walk away and start fresh, but honestly, I make too much and have too many perks that nobody really knows about. I watch job boards to see what's being posted, and right now there's a job that I think I'd be excellent at, but there's no way we could afford for me to voluntarily take a 40% pay cut right now. And so someone else will get hired, and I'll just continue to muddle along doing what I do.

I don't think I mentioned that I finally finished my blanket project. It turned out really well, although during the last stages I thought of at least a half dozen ways I could have made it better. Since finishing that, I've started on a new puzzle. I have quite a bit completed, but what I have left is basically two sections of plain colour (no patterns at all), and the pieces are all similar in shape. I anticipate a considerable amount of time getting the rest done.

And dammit - I just realized that I forgot to do my monthly goals recap again. It's too late do it tonight, so I'll have to find some time this week to get caught up.

Well, it's been a long day and I need some sleep. Have a wonderful and enjoyable week, and I'll see you again soon. =]
arthur_p_dent: (Default)
Well, let's start this off very simply... read the first two paragraphs of last week's post. The things I wanted to address, I did not address. Minor caveat with running because I had a cold for much of the week, but I could have done other things to make up for it and did not.

Another thing I noticed (OK, I didn't just notice it, but I feel I need to own up to it) is that I've been avoiding being at home as much as I can lately. It's a double-edged sword - I'm hiding from the burden of household responsibilities, but in doing so I'm not getting nearly enough done, which just makes the burden feel even heavier, and makes me want to hide from it even more. It's an exhausting cycle, and I know I'm not coping with it in the right way, but...

The only really enjoyable part of the week was getting to hang out with my good friend Friday evening for a couple beverages and some good conversation. Her BF was there as well - I like him, he's a good guy, but I do wish we had more in common (sometimes I feel it's a bit awkward talking about the same few things all the time).

Coming up this week I've got month end (ugh), there are some things around the house that I must arrange to get taken care of soon (pain in the ass), and I need to try to stop avoiding home (easier said than done). And I need to get some running in because I've got a 5K to do next Sunday (my first run event of the year).

For now I'm off to bed. Have a great week! =]
arthur_p_dent: (Default)
It's been an OK week again, although there are some things I didn't so so well with and would like to improve. Goals in general were poor again, and it looks like at least some of it is poor time management, and a bit of laziness. I'm not getting to bed on time or sleeping enough, and I noticed that I'm making excuses to bypass chores and other things. Not ideal by any stretch, and something I need to address this week.

I didn't run enough this week either, and I'm starting to notice the difference in how I feel when I do run. Chillier temps have kept me from running outdoors as much, but laziness has kept me from making up for it on the treadmill. No improvement in the weather is expected until next weekend, so I better find myself some motivation quick.

There were a couple decent weather days though, which I did take advantage of. For run club on Tuesday it was actually mild enough for the bar to open their patio, which was a nice treat. We had a big turnout that night as well, with several people I haven't seen in a while. It was also a pleasant day on Friday, and after my good friend and I had lunch we had time to go for a stroll. I felt bad - the breeze was a bit cool and her ears weren't happy about that. But it was still a nice walk and we had good conversation along the way. I followed that up with a run later in the afternoon, which wasn't the best run but at least I got out there.

I had Friday off which allowed me to balance out my weekend a bit better than normal. I got through shopping OK (despite a wild goose chase at Costco looking for something that they didn't have in store). And even though today was a heavy food prep day, I now have enough things in the freezer to cover lunches for a few weeks, so the next coupe of weekends won't be nearly as busy. I also found some much needed free time to get back to my blanket project from last year. As of now I have only about an hour or so left and it'll finally be done - just in time to put it away until fall. XD

And that wraps up another week. Coming up, I finally have some ideas about different activities and day-trips, so I'm planning to spend some time looking into those. But other than that I'm hoping it will be a quiet week.

I hope you all have a great week ahead. See you again soon. =]
arthur_p_dent: (Default)
Most of the non-work portion of the past week has been pretty good, although I did unfortunately fall behind on several chores. Also, even though I haven't had time today to review my goals, I do know that many were missed again. I'm having trouble finding the motivation to getting myself refocused and back on track, and I'm starting to wonder if maybe I just put too much on my plate. That's something I'll need to look into soon.

Another less-than-ideal thing was the root canal I had mid-week. The procedure was fine, albeit a long appointment (3 hours). However, this morning I started to get some pain in that area that kinda feels like a new infection could be firing up. If it's still progressing in the morning I'll have to call and see if the dentist can take a look.

Running has been decent, despite only getting out twice. Tuesday at run club I finished my 5K only two seconds short of my personal record. On Thursday I did another 5K around home, and proceeded to beat that record by a full 30 seconds. It's only March and I've already reached one of my running goals for the year - I think I'm going to see a lot of progress over the coming months.

I had a very busy weekend with curling. Friday was a normal night, and then Saturday I was in an all-day tournament with a group of good friends (including my goodest good friend). Our three games went well - a tie, then a close loss, and finally a strong win - and we finished fourth out of eight teams. We met a lot of really nice people from other cities in both Canada and the US, and the meals during the day were wonderful as well. I would definitely play in this one again next year.

The downside to having an entire day of enjoyment is that all of my weekend responsibilities had to be consolidated into today. I had a good plan in place, and probably would have been fine getting everything done, except I ran into some friends from my running club while I was having lunch. They were just coming back from a race, and I ended up hanging out with them for a couple hours. It was a fun afternoon, but it also really overloaded the remainder of my day, and I'll have to get a jump on finishing some things as soon as I get home from work tomorrow.

Nothing much on the calendar for the coming week, although I am taking Friday off and hopefully I can use a bit of the day to recharge.

And with that I'll say so long for another week. Until next time. =]
arthur_p_dent: (Default)
Well, it's only the beginning of March, and already I've:
- let my goals drop to abysmal numbers
- missed a weekly post
- missed a monthly recap post
- not made any plans for a quarterly activity
- not figured out how to do a "me" day or a "fun" day

I could go on, but why? I just looked back at February and even though I knew it wasn't good, I had no idea it was that bad. January was good, and I had several things I was interested in looking into, but I've been in another funk lately and I don't even have the mental energy to get started on any of it.

Work has been much the same (although now that I'm thinking about it I forgot to set something up on Thursday and people are going to freak when they find out). I found out last week that another plant closing is going to be announced this month. That'll be the fourth of the eight plants we had when the company was bought a couple years back. The writing is on the wall now - they're probably closing all of our plants. Which means in the next year or so, I'll be out the door. And so, I'm shifting into "ride it out for the severance" mode. I just hope it doesn't ruin my work ethic for my next employer.

There have been a few bright spots. Our group of former coworkers got together for dinner last week. Some of the people have stopped coming, which I kinda figured would happen, but there's still several who want to keep this up and that makes me pretty happy. I've been keeping up somewhat ok with running, but I seem to lose traction in the middle of the week so it's been a bit inconsistent. I got a couple pairs of new shoes last weekend and finally got some really nice weather today to try one of them out - did a 10K and they were very comfy. And, as it is with most Fridays, I got to spend some very nice hanging-out time with my good friend the past couple weeks (definitely the brightest of the bright spots!).

Coming up this week we've got some beautiful spring-like temps in the forecast, so I expect to get out running quite a bit. I've also got an all-day curling tournament on Saturday with a group of friends that I'm really excited for (and you know, that probably counts as a fun day and a quarterly activity - hallelujah!). But for this week I'll bring this to a close and head off to bed. Until next time. =]

It's been a fairly busy week, and I'm simply worn out now. More so because today I spent nearly the entire day on my feet - I think between 8am-8pm the total amount of time I spent seated was less than one hour. Yes, I did get a lot done in preparation for the week, but it also left me feeling almost like the weekend didn't really exist.

The week actually started ok since Monday was a holiday. Most of my things got done on Sunday, so I was able to spend a lot of the day just relaxing at home. But then it was back to work, and coming back after a long weekend is always a pain. Wednesday I ended up traveling to one of the US plants to meet with their production manager and look into some challenges with a new monitoring system he installed. I needed to see it in action on the shop floor and to see how the operators interacted with it, and the plan was to figure out how I could update our main system so that both would work together seamlessly. I expected to need an hour - I had his answer in three minutes. What he wanted was impossible. His monitoring system was written to work specifically with one other system in the organization, which functions entirely differently than ours. No amount of data updates or workarounds would help - total incompatibility. I'd say the day was a waste, but had I not gone I never would have been able to see the disconnects, and I could have ended up doing weeks of work for nothing.

Thursday I had an appointment with my new dentist, and since I was a new patient I was there for a couple hours in total. Paperwork, a cleaning, x-rays, the examination, and a consultation - very thorough. That, combined with Wednesday's travels, threw me off my schedule for a lot of things. Trying to get caught up forced me to put off some things, including running, which I didn't do all week long. I did get a couple runs in over the weekend though, so that's good.

Friday I got out for lunch with my good friend, at a local Mexican restaurant known for their variety of tacos. I wasn't feeling all that taco-y though, and their burger special of the month caught my eye. Honestly, it was among the best burgers I've had in the city in a long time, and I'll definitely get one there again. However, curling that night was a much less enjoyable experience. My opponents were the friends that I won against a few weeks back, but this time around it was a much different story. They were simply on, pretty much the entire game, and even when we made fantastic shots they always had the immediate answer. Sometimes it goes that way, but it still doesn't feel all that good when it does.

Saturday there was a group of my curling friends participating in a tournament, and I was able to get out and watch their first match. That was a nice break in the week, and about the first amount of relaxation I had in quite a while. The tournament was at a private country club, I had a very nice lunch while I was there, and I got to watch my friends play from a great vantage point. In a few weeks three of them plus myself will be playing as a team in another tournament, which I'm really looking forward to.

And now, since that was a much longer post than I thought it would be, and since another Monday morning will be here sooner than I want it to be, I'll wrap it up for this week. I hope you're all doing well, and have a wonderful week to come. =]

Well, this past week was decidedly less crappy than the one before, but there were still some things I'd like to see get better.

My cold finally subsided mid-week, and I'm very thankful that it didn't move into my chest (which would have added another two weeks of misery). I was able to ease back into some running and it's been feeling pretty good, so even though I didn't do enough to make my weekly goal, I'm still happy about where I'm at. Goals overall were low again, but a lot of that was due to still being sick at the start of the week. I'm not going to beat myself up over the last couple of weeks, but I am resolved to get back on track.

Work was fairly fine, with only some minor annoyances (the normal ones that crop up regularly). I do have one issue at work that I feel is becoming a problem, and to help correct it I'm adding a new goal starting this week. The acronym for it is WTF - Work 'Til Four. I've found myself taking advantage of my "self-managing" situation at work and leaving early far too often. My work ethic is much better than that, and just because I don't particularly like my job anymore doesn't mean I should be performing it at a lower level. So if I have to make it a goal in order to get my brain to cooperate, so be it.

The weekend hasn't been too bad, despite the weather (we lucked out and didn't get hit nearly as badly as was predicted). I took Friday off (first one of the year), and with a holiday tomorrow I ended up with a four-day weekend. I picked up sushi and brought it over to my good friend's place, and we had a nice relaxing lunch away from the noise of a restaurant - something we haven't done in quite a long time. Curling was ok - we lost, but the game never really got out of hand. And with almost all of my chores out of the way, the plan for tomorrow is a very low-key day at home, and to get back to working on my blanket project from last year.

No bedtime tonight so I'm going to do a bit of research on new running shoes - my current ones are wearing out, and there's a big sale coming up at the local running store. So good night, and have a great week ahead. See you soon. =]

For several reasons, this past week wasn't the greatest.

First off, work. It started with month end when I discovered a huge system error in three of my companies. I lost half a day getting that all sorted out, which made hitting my deadlines very difficult. Then one of the US controllers offered to "help me out" by taking over doing my entries. This is the same one that refuses to post one of those entries because they "can't understand why a system would work that way, so it must be wrong". This entire week has left me feeling like I'm not taken seriously, even though I'm the one person left with any real knowledge, and the one person trying to help them out. It's been quite a while, but I've gotten back to the point where I think it's time to explore other opportunities and wash my hands of this place.

After work Tuesday I was really aggravated, and even though the temps weren't great I wanted to go run with the run club and burn off some of that negative energy. I had a decent run, and hanging out after helped considerably as well, but when I woke up the next morning I felt like I had been hit by a truck. Raw throat, dry cough, headache, and a total lack of energy. I tried working from home to finish month end but there were some network issues, and I had to go into the office. And two hours later when I had finished, I was on my way back home. I slept, had some chicken soup, rested, slept some more, and after dinner I went to bed early. That helped a lot with the tiredness, but I've still been sick since then (it moved into my sinuses for the weekend - ugh). Hopefully it clears up in the next couple days.

Despite my cold I was still able to have lunch with my good friend, which I was really looking forward to - it had been a while since were able to get together. I also made it out to curling, and after falling into a very deep hole early on, we made some excellent and exciting shots, got back into it, and eventually came away with the win.

The weekend has been pretty quiet. I kept the chores and other normal things to as much of a minimum as I could, and tried to rest as much as possible. And I made some comfort food for dinner today - pot roast and mashed potatoes, which was super yummy. Unfortunately my goals took a beating this week, but that's to be expected when you're under the weather.

And with that I'm off. Back to work in the morning, so it's time to get some sleep. Hope you're all well. I'll see you next time. =]

It's been another relatively ok week. No real issues at work, other than a project that I wanted to get started never got off the ground. I wasn't avoiding it - other things simply kept coming up. And now with month end starting tomorrow, I doubt I'll be able to get any traction on it this coming week either.

The weather has continued to be "mild" (read that as "not crazy freezing") and I've managed to get outside for a couple more runs, including run club on Tuesday. The wind was really strong and gusty that day though, so it certainly wasn't a cake-walk. And it looks like this week the temp should be just tolerable enough to get out there again. It's nice to get a break from the treadmill once in a while.

Curling on Friday was a really good night. Not only was it fun to play against my friends on the opposing team, but our team was making some very good shots that put on a lot of pressure and forced some errors, and we capitalized and won the game. Ironically, one of those friends is also in my fantasy hockey league and we were facing each other there this week as well - and he absolutely creamed me. Turn about is fair play, I suppose.

The weekend also went well. I even manage a couple hours of relax time this afternoon, which is very rare for me on a Sunday. I disassembled and put away the puzzle I did the previous week, and got the frame done on a new one. This one won't go as quickly as the last because I do still want to get back to my blanket - I just wasn't in that frame of mind today.

And that's about it for this week, and I am off to sleep. Have a wonderful week, and I'll see you again. =]

Well, here we are for the first monthly goal review of 2025. It was a bit of a truncated month, since I didn't have my goals for the year set until midway through, but overall I think it went fairly well.

Jan. 31 Goals... )

Weekly Goals... )

Monthly Goals... )

Quarterly Goals... )

By the numbers, the month averaged out at 83%, so quite good overall. Looking forward to continued success in February. =]
