It's lunch time. Just had sushi in the park (now a regular weekly thing). Solo today - beautiful weather and little foot traffic, so it's been quite peaceful. The past couple weeks I shared this time with a friend, which was also great. All in all I'm really happy I had this idea.

Tomorrow is my afternoon off. So far it's just been golf, and I think that's what I'll do tomorrow as well. But taking that time during the week has also turned out to be a really great way to break up the monotony of the everyday. I'm going to have to put some thought into what I can do to carry this on through the colder months, because being cooped up indoors for many months gets old real quick.

My crochet blanket project is temporarily on hold. Why, you ask? Because I started another crochet blanket project! This one was a spur of the moment decision and has a short timeline, so it's the priority for the next week or so. A coworker is expecting next month, so I decided to make a baby blanket for the little ragamuffin. Pretty much winging it - no real pattern to follow (I get a kick out of doing that!). Sorry, no pics yet. You'll have to wait until it's finished.

Oh, and I went to two concerts recently. Billy Joel earlier in the month, and Shinedown a few days ago. Both were supposed to be in 2020, but for some strange reason kept getting delayed???? LOL! Both were great shows, and it was awesome getting back into larger events again.

Well, that about sums up the past couple weeks. Time to head back to the office (I'm NOT talking about that - this is a happy post!). Hopefully you're all having a good week so far, and it continues on as well.

Well, today was the day. Took a while to work myself up to it, but I finally took the plunge and got myself some raw fish. Didn’t muddy it up with a bunch of other flavours, no trying to hide the taste - straight up tuna wrapped in seaweed, and rolled in rice.

So a group of us at work all ordered for lunch. As we’re sitting there talking, it dawned on me that I had this piece of sushi held in my chopsticks (yes, I’m even getting half-decent at using chopsticks now) for almost five minutes. Was I nervous AF, or just not paying attention? Well, both - but definitely more the former than the latter. So after a good little joke aimed squarely at myself, the first bite. And?

Meh. The texture just blended in with everything else. The taste was barely perceptible - I could taste the rice more than the fish. Overall quite disappointing - I literally could have had a bowl of rice and been just as satisfied.

Now let’s be fair. This is one restaurant out of dozens. This is one roll out of countless options. I’m certainly not dismissing the idea of it just based on one experience - there will be a next time. But the biggest takeaway is that I overcame a personal apprehension, and over the course of several good meals have found myself very much liking something new.

A good day indeed.  =]

After my initial foray into the world of sushi a couple weeks back, I felt like it was time to test the waters again. First time around was verrrry timid - smoked salmon, tempura battered, a bit of spice to mask the other flavours. Basically I dipped a toe into the kiddie pool.

So, time to wade in about waist deep. I decided to try some new things for me - crab, caviar, and seaweed. Still nothing raw, but definitely outside of my normal comfort zone food-wise. There were some familiar ingredients as well, to help balance it out - avocado, shrimp, cucumber, and rice. And some tasty sauces for dipping.

[ EDIT: In part 1, I stated that I can’t stand cucumbers. This is still true. However, virtually everything had cucumber in it. Plus, I hoped that it would offset/balance some of the other flavours - which also ended up being true. Oddly enough, I barely noticed it. ]

Verdict? Overall, quite pleased. I was hesitant with the crab but found it quite tasty. The caviar was pretty much just salty. The familiar ingredients were pretty much like you’d expect. But the seaweed. It wasn’t what I would call an unpleasant flavour, but the taste is still lingering and I think that’s what is bothering me about the whole meal.

Will there be a “part 3”? I think there has to be. I will eventually have to take that plunge into the deep end and get something raw. Until then...

Yesterday a coworker was ordering sushi for her lunch, and she asked if I was interested. At first I declined, but then though “what the hell - why not?”. I don’t know if there’s any real reason why I’ve never tried it before. I guess I don’t really go out of my way for seafood in general, so more than likely it’s just never come up.

So after spending what felt like forever looking at the menu (mostly because almost everything had cucumbers in it, which I can’t stand), I finally settled on a Jamaican Roll. Kind of a timid first step since it used smoked salmon - so no raw fish this time. Overall it wasn’t bad. I did have one revelation - after the first bite I remembered that I don’t really like salmon. But there were enough other flavours, plus a little spice, that helped keep the salmon from being too prominent.

Will I try it again? Yes.
Will it be something different? Definitely.

I think Sushi is one of those things that has pretty polarized opinions - love it or hate it. I’m interested to see what other think
