Me… Tattoos

I suppose the first question any normal person would ask of someone who has an interest in tattoos would be “How many tattoos do you have?”. Would it surprise you if I said “only one, and I got it 20 years ago. And I’m not even all that happy with it.”? So how can I come here and claim that it’s an internet of mine?
My innate need to plan things, coupled with my crippling inability to make decisions, had a great deal to do with it. Then, when I finally had some things I was willing to commit to, let’s just throw a pandemic into the mix and shut the whole industry down (silver lining - I wouldn’t have been happy with what I had in the works back then either).
So here I sit today. Liking tattoos, wanting tattoos, but still only having one. Obviously there’s something in the works, otherwise this would be a short and slightly depressing story.
I am currently in the process of designing seven tattoos for myself. Some are very linear that I’ve sketched out on my own (my left brain hard at work), others are decidedly artistic (these are conceptual - I need someone with actual talent to do the visual stuff on these ones). One will be a coverup of sorts for the one I have now - actually more of a “reimagining”. The fact that there are seven is definitely intentional, and even though they are all distinctly different, there is a common theme throughout.
The next question I’m sure is on your minds is “What the hell is taking you so long?!?” I could make some bogus excuse about life getting in the way, blah, blah, blah - but ultimately I really don’t know why I’ve been putting this off for so long. However, I can say that I’m glad I waited, because I’m really excited about the direction I’m going with it now.
Now, all that’s left is to get started. =]

Each one will be centred around this, but it won’t be obvious to the casual observer because there isn’t going to be any context pointing back to it.
There is a secondary theme as well, which I expect will be equally as unnoticeable as the first. Taken as a whole, the series of tattoos will pay a sort of homage to my personal “nerd-iverse”. Obviously Hitchhiker’s, but there are also ties to Dr Who and The Simpsons, and I just had an idea to look into referencing Monty Python (I mean, how did I not pick up on The Meaning of Life before now???).
Beyond that, all that’s left to figure out is when and where to begin.

Makes it all the better that you waited, it seems, since it gave you time to sort of map out your "nerd-iverse" to your best advantage. Is this something you intend to get started soon?

Date: 2021-08-25 01:06 am (UTC)I do have a week off planned for next month, and if I can pull it off I’d like to get 2 done during that time. Probably the ones destined for my calves - those are the linear ones I designed myself, and are simple enough that I could have apprentices do them (easier to book time vs established artists, and a little more cost effective if I’m doing two in fairly short order).
Beyond that who knows? Body art and modification will be one of the first industries shut down if another Covid lockdown happens, and likely one of the last ones to reopen - so it could be next summer before things continue. But if that does happen I’ll spend the downtime getting the rest designed for me, and I should be ready to jump in head first as soon as I can.

Date: 2021-08-25 03:24 am (UTC)Fingers crossed that you're able to get the calf tats done during your week off, as I imagine you're right about the wait time in the event of another wave of COVID lockdown measures. But, hey, like you said-- that's just time you can use to get the remaining images designed so you're ready when things open up again :D
