Summer Project #2 - Complete
Aug. 6th, 2022 11:21 pmAs I mentioned a couple weeks back, I put my original summer project on hold to start working on a crochet baby blanket for a coworker. Well, it's done! And, as promised, here's a picture of the finished piece:
Now, I was basically winging this one - no pattern of any kind. I picked a stitch, made a chain to the length I wanted, and started working the yarn. I had a rough idea of the number of rows to stitch, and when I got to the half-way point I did some measurements and got a final number. When I finished the last row, I added on the border and voila!
I washed it today and it's currently pinned out on a blocking board. I have a couple of small mending jobs to do tomorrow - the knots where I joined the balls of yarn together came untied, but thankfully none of the stitching unraveled.
Lots of lessons learned from this project. My tension was all over the map, especially early on - I had trouble at the beginning getting used to the type of yarn and how to hold it (it was "slippery"). I also learned how important a test patch is when you aren't working from a pre-made pattern. I found I had to re-evaluate my sizing a couple of times along the way because I wasn't hitting the measurements I was expecting.
All-in-all I really enjoyed this little project. It was good practice too, because I have another coworker who's due in November (that'll be baby blanket #2), and, some friends of mine just let me know a couple days ago that they are expecting in January (which will be baby blanket #3). That third one I will probably work from a pattern and put a lot of effort into. They are very good friends - I stood in their wedding party, I was part of their gender-reveal party for their first born, and they've asked me to be a part of this one coming up as well.
So now that I've had a few days off from crochet, it's time that I got back to making my own blanket. Hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll have a update on that one for you.
