Hi there. Quite a bit happened last week, so if this sentence is followed by a cut you'll know I got long-winded. XD

On NYE I ended up chatting with my friend J (I wrote a post a couple years back about how we were drifting apart as friends). It's been well over a year since we've seen each other, and we made plans for lunch last week but she ended up having to reschedule - we'll see if that happens.

As I wrote last week, I've started on a new list of goals. Things have started out pretty good, with an 82% success rate last week. However, I can already see that a lack of good sleeping habits is still the primary factor in things that get missed, so making improvements there is going to be my major focus.

Work was full of interesting items. Coming back from a holiday break and going straight into a month-end is always trying, but in the midst of that I also had to deal with my employee resigning, and actually walking out the day before he had agreed to stay to. To make matters worse, the company is in the process of changing ownership - the 50 year old family business will very soon be part of a fairly large public corporation. Since we have no idea whether there will be any reorganization within our departments, my boss and I agreed that hiring someone new should be put on hold until we have some answers. Unfortunately that means that for the immediate future I'll have to cover all of the work for my department on my own.

Now, you might be thinking "that's a lot for one week" - and normally I'd agree. But since it's the start of a new year, let's see just how crazy I can make it...

Someone tried to compromise my identity. Not just a "click this link to track your package" phishing email - they contacted me directly posing as family members (through what appeared to be their actual phone numbers and social media accounts) and asked me questions to try and get specific information. Fortunately I caught on before I gave away anything that wasn't already public knowledge. I actually feel really stupid about this though, for all the times I've said "I can't believe people get taken in that easily", because it damned near happened to me. Like my trust issues needed any more fuel. =\

The week did round out fairly well. Friday I had lunch with my friend JT (not the same J that I spoke about earlier). Friday I also had my curling league, which is a fun social night out. And on the weekend I started another crochet project - a baby blanket for my friend JH (wow, I know a lot of people with "J" names).

So, yeah. Not exactly how I was expecting to start out 2023. With any luck the coming weeks will have more "That's Great!" moments, and fewer "WTF?" moments.

I hope everyone's year is starting out well. See you next week!  =]

Holy heck, that's quite a week!

I do remember you posting about the friend you were drifting from. Sad to hear that the distance seems to still be growing but I do hope that lunch actually happens for you.

Having to take full responsibility for a department by yourself is stress on top of stress and I wish you the best in dealing with it. Fingers crossed the transition goes more smoothly for you guys.

Oof, the paragraph about the scam had me concerned for a moment there! I'm glad you caught onto what was happening before giving too much away. That kind of thing always seems like it'll be obvious until it happens, especially if you're used to the lower effort phishing emails. (I say, having almost clicked a suspicious link last year when I got a scam email mixed up with one of my legit tracking notifications...)

At least the week ended well! Lunch with a friend, a new project-- sets a good precedent going forward! Maybe you just got all your WTF? moments out of the way early? XD

Oh, I'm glad it arrived! And I appreciate that you didn't use the post as an opportunity to call me out for glitter-bombing you, haha. For real, though, sorry about that. I didn't bother buying new cards because I remembered there were some around the house-- I did not remember the glitter! Believe it or not, I knocked a significant amount off before mailing...

That's one way to brighten up the workplace!

Oh, btw, I completely forgot to mention in light of my glitter guilt-- your card actually just arrived today! It was a lovely surprise, so you can consider me appropriately "wobbled" by it XD

That IS a lot for one week.

On the identity theft attempt, I don't know if it helps, but: people do these things because they work. Anyone can be lied to. It's not a matter of intelligence, it's an exploitation of the very things that make us good family members, friends, citizens.

I'm glad you caught it, and didn't give them anything nonpublic.

Hoping the next week is kinder to you!

Hm. I wonder if it's worth asking around? Someone else may have spoken with your scammer, too.
