Not Too Bad...

"Not too bad"
When asked how we're doing, we use it as a general, noncommital response, akin to "I'm ok" or "Pretty good".
But think about it the full sentence that is implied by these words. What we're actually saying is "Things are bad, just not *too* bad".
Like, "My dog just crapped all over the house, and now I have to clean it up.". That's *bad*, but not *too* bad.
Anyway, just a goofy thing that popped into my head after I passed a mail carrier and he asked "How are you today?"
