This Past Week - Part 2...
Mar. 9th, 2023 10:30 pmCurling, curling, and more curling.
Last Friday was my league night. With a winter storm rolling through, I was surprised we even had enough people show up to play. But play we did, and win we did as well! Now, this is a rec league, and I'm used to having a middle-of-the-road team every year - which is cool, because for me it's more about getting out and having some fun than being competitive. But this season I have a really fun group of people on my team, and we're playing well together, and we're currently tied for first!
The following day, my friend and I went to a nearby city to check out a professional curling event, The Brier, which is the men's national championship tournament here in Canada. This was my first time seeing curling at this level in person, and since my friend is also a curler, we had so much to talk about. In fact, I don't think we shut up the entire time! Our attention kept bouncing back and forth between games, we talked about what our strategies would be, what we thought their strategies were, how the hell they could even *see* the shots they were trying to make, let alone actually *make* them, etc etc. It was a fun experience, and a great day.
Part of the reason I wanted to defer this part of my post until today was because I enjoyed the tournament so much, I decided to take an impromptu day off from work and go again. I watched two more rounds today, and this time I got seats right down by the ice. Seeing it played from that close of a vantage point, it's even more amazing just how good these guys are. And like any professional sport, you can really see the vast difference between a pro player and an average Joe like me.
So yeah - curling, curling, and more curling. And since tomorrow is Friday...
You get the idea. =]
