After my initial foray into the world of sushi a couple weeks back, I felt like it was time to test the waters again. First time around was verrrry timid - smoked salmon, tempura battered, a bit of spice to mask the other flavours. Basically I dipped a toe into the kiddie pool.

So, time to wade in about waist deep. I decided to try some new things for me - crab, caviar, and seaweed. Still nothing raw, but definitely outside of my normal comfort zone food-wise. There were some familiar ingredients as well, to help balance it out - avocado, shrimp, cucumber, and rice. And some tasty sauces for dipping.

[ EDIT: In part 1, I stated that I can’t stand cucumbers. This is still true. However, virtually everything had cucumber in it. Plus, I hoped that it would offset/balance some of the other flavours - which also ended up being true. Oddly enough, I barely noticed it. ]

Verdict? Overall, quite pleased. I was hesitant with the crab but found it quite tasty. The caviar was pretty much just salty. The familiar ingredients were pretty much like you’d expect. But the seaweed. It wasn’t what I would call an unpleasant flavour, but the taste is still lingering and I think that’s what is bothering me about the whole meal.

Will there be a “part 3”? I think there has to be. I will eventually have to take that plunge into the deep end and get something raw. Until then...
