This Past Week...
Here we are, the first post of a brand new year. I was looking forward to a lot of good things when the week started, but after a couple good days things really went to shit.
There was no curling on Friday, so we took the opportunity to have my cousin over for dinner. He's my only family anywhere nearby, and definitely the closest family member I have left. We don't see each other nearly enough anymore, and it was a great visit.
Saturday evening I spent some time with my very good friend. We got to go out for dinner rather than our usual lunch, and had some terrific hang out time afterward. It's not often our schedules line up on the weekend, especially during the holidays - I'm really glad it worked out this year.
Now here's where things started to go sideways...
I had plans for NYE. First time I've had NYE plans since I used to work in bars back in the day, and I was excited about going. But then... there was the to-do list. During the day it kept growing and growing, with things I had to get done before returning to work. And the more it grew, the more I got overwhelmed by it. So much so that I talked myself out of going out to celebrate NYE in order to get it caught up - which instead led to just staying up all night pissed off at myself. The following day was a 9-hour marathon on my feet, and I still never got the list finished. (Note: there's a lesson I learned in here that I'll elaborate on in another post).
And here's where things fell off a cliff...
Early Tuesday morning my FIL passed away. His health had been declining rapidly the past couple years, and I could tell lately that he was in the day-to-day stages. Of course, that doesn't make it any easier to cope with the sudden loss of someone who, for the past 2+ decades, had treated me like he would his own son. He would have turned 83 in a few days, and he was already talking about "having the kids over for Chinese". I'm going to miss him.
So here we are, a few days into the new year. Hopefully it's starting off on the right foot for everyone, and you have lots of good things ahead. As for me, I'm off to bed to try and salvage a few hours of sleep (naturally, I'm already missing my sleep goals for the year). Talk to you again next week. =]
