This past year...

Welcome to 2024. To start this year off, here's a look back at how I did with the goals I set for myself in 2023...

I had eight categories that I was tracking throughout the year. I used 2/3 (67%) as the pass/fail marker, and low and behold there was a 50/50 split. Let's have a look at the numbers...

Pass:

Coffee - max 3 per day: 95.1%  By far the most successful result of the year. I used to have 5+ every day, but now it's rare that I even want a third cup anymore. I'll track it in the coming year, but it won't be an official goal.

Weekly DW post on time: 80.8%  This got a little loosey-goosey near the end of the year when I decided to stop penalizing myself for not posting on Wednesday, but I like the flexibility of it and plan to keep it that way.

Reading - min 2 times per week: 79.3%  I split the year between reading and doing crafts. On the weeks I did reading I found it very easy to pick up a book for an hour or two here and there and meet the goal. Last year was LOTR - next year__?

[Personal daily goal]: 75.3%  I was very pleased to see this result, and plan to push for even greater improvement next year.

Fail:

Crafting - min 2 times per week: 62.5%  Not as easy to commit the time to as reading was - maybe because I didn't have any deadlines to meet? I have the materials for crocheting a new blanket, as well as some basic starting materials for macramé, so we'll see if I can get the numbers up on this one.

Sleep - min 5 hours per night: 58.8%  There's been some improvement in the past month or so, but not nearly enough to overcome the deficits from the middle of the year. I'm thinking of a couple different ways to modify this one for 2024, to hopefully make success more achievable.

[Personal daily goal]: 56.6%  I wasn't surprised by this one - most of the things that had an impact on my sleep patterns also had a significant impact here. Huge changes coming for this category.

Exercise - min 4 times per week: 52.9%  Things were sliding downhill even before I hurt my knee in the summer, and the past 4 months I've done pretty much nothing (I stopped tracking this at the start of September). This is a must-restart category - I just need to take it easy at the beginning to try and avoid any new injuries.

Overall:

The average for the year ended up at 70.2%, and by the numbers that's not too bad. However, the three categories that have the biggest affect on me physically and mentally are all clustered at the bottom, and that's definitely not a recipe for success.

I'm starting this year with a lot of challenges to overcome. I'm the heaviest I've been since I started keeping track at the start of 2020 (all the weight that took me 3.5 years to lose, I put back on in the past 6 months). I feel tired all the time, I'm often quick to get frustrated, and even doing the things that make me happy doesn't seem to have any lasting effect.

These are things I definitely want to change, and it starts with my goals for 2024. I have a number of modifications and additions I'd like to make, and over the next couple weeks I'll be dedicating at least an hour a day to look at each of them closely - not just to figure out how to quantify them, but more importantly, to understand just what it is I want to get out of them. Goal #1 for 2024 is to have that done and my planner prepared for the year by January 15.

And that will wrap things up for 2023. For those who have been following along I thank you for your comments and encouragement. I hope you'll stick with me and see what 2024 brings. =]
